Come and experience one of the most charming and colourful small towns in Europe! Here in the small medieval town of Gmünd in Kärnten, we have concentrated on arts and culture for the last thirty years, and in 2011 we were thrilled to be given the EDEN AWARD (European Destination of Excellence) for sustainable urban development. Its stunning location between two impressive national parks, the Hohe Tauern and the Nockberg Biosphere, and its exquisitely preserved medieval town architecture, make our town the perfect environment for an extensive array of cultural events: with artist residencies, numerous galleries, exhibitions, museums, sculpture gardens and workshops, we have arts and culture for every taste and age. By focusing on contemporary fine art and crafts, we have made Gmünd one of the most lively and desirable small towns in Austria.
Every year the main summer exhibition in Stadtturm Gmünd, one of Carinthia’s most important exhibition venues, presents internationally celebrated artists such as Matisse, Dürer and Miró. At the Pankratium - House of Wonders – you can not only hear music, but can also see and feel it in a series of fascinating hands-on experiments. The privately owned Porsche Car Museum attracts automobile fans from all over the world, and documents Prof. Porsche's stay in Gmünd during World War II when he created the first Porsche 356. With numerous open galleries and studios presenting contemporary fine arts, painting, photography, sculpture and media art, a day’s excursion is a surprising and uplifting experience. Professional arts and crafts studios dotted all over the town will tempt you to browse and buy unique works of art. In the cosmopolitan atmosphere here you can meet both local and international artists-in-residence. From May to September we offer a wide range of creative classes at the Gmünd Summer Academy, including a workshop teaching the celebrated Ravenna mosaic method. Children are not forgotten, with art courses for younger visitors taking place at the Malwerkstatte. In the evenings you can choose from the most varied programme of cultural events in Upper Carinthia: concerts, theatre, cabaret, literary readings and our new Arts Cinema. Our small Kulturkino presents high quality entertainment in a charming, intimate way. Unsurprisingly, the town has gained a great deal of recognition: not only did we receive the EDEN Award 2011, but we were also named Most Liveable community in Carinthia, and in 2018 Gmünd was a project of the European Year of Cultural Heritage. Year after year we attract culture-loving visitors from all over the world, and this year Artists' Town Gmünd is glad to welcome you!
