EXHIBITION STADTTUMGALERIE GMÜND 2020
Picasso in the Artists´ Town of Gmünd! From 9 May to 27 September 2020, the Stadtturmgalerie Gmünd will be showing a selection of lithographs, etchings and coloured linocuts by Pablo Picasso, one of the most influential and formative artists of the 20th century. The exhibition in Gmünd intends to raise awareness for the artistic significance of the graphic works in the artist's oeuvre.
Over the past few years, the Stadtturmgalerie Gmünd has celebrated numerous successes with the exhibitions on DÜRER IN GMÜND (2015), GOYA IN GMÜND (2016), JOAN MIRÓ | THE POETRY OF COLOUR (2017), HENRI MATISSE | THE PRINTMAKING WORK (2018), and WILLIAM TURNER | THE ARTIST ON TRAVELS last summer. In 2020, we are looking forward to a new sensational event: in cooperation with two large European print collections, the German Boisserée Collection in Cologne and the Frederick Mulder Ltd. print collection in London, the cultural initiative Gmünd is able to present Picasso, probably the most famous artist of the 20th century. With lithographs, aquatint etchings and coloured linocuts from a total of four creative decades, the exhibition will highlight the artistic significance of Picasso’s graphic works in his oeuvre.
Part of the show in Gmünd will be dedicated to selected sheets from Picasso's early, sensational "Suite Vollard". Picasso created this series of 100 etchings between 1930 and 1937 similar to a diary. Since Picasso's artistic work is always intimately connected with his private life, his personal experiences are also detectable in the "Suite Vollard": the eternal battle of the sexes, the relationship between artist and model and artwork, and mythological themes. Another focus of the Gmünd exhibition is Picasso and his portraits of women. Picasso captured each of his many "partners in life" in numerous prints.
Finally, it is impossible to discuss Picasso without considering his representations of the bullfight. Virtually Picasso's alter ego, the bull as a symbol of unbridled power and masculinity appears in countless of his works. An impressive selection of etchings and coloured linocuts on this subject will be shown in the Stadtturmgalerie. A particularly valuable enrichment on a didactic level are selected linocuts at different stages of the artwork’s production, which highlight the unique nature even of Picasso’s prints. Overall, the selected sheets share one common factor: they are an impressive testimonial to Picasso's extraordinary craftsmanship and his great joy for experimentation.
EXTENSIVE SUPPORTING PROGRAMME & CATALOGUE
